Journey To Increase Utilization Rate
The pew center research study reveals that the dental utilization rate has sharply declined in recent have seen a sharp increase in emergency room use for dental care, largely for preventable conditions that could have been avoided with routine dental care at a considerably lower cost. Two recent studies based on data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) show that the percent of the adult population with a dental visit in the last 12 months has been declining since the early 2000s. The trend is particularly pronounced for low-income adults. The major finding is that the downward trend was established well before the recent economic downturn. Among children, however, the trend in the utilization of dental care is different from adults.
Several factors play an important role in the downward pattern of dental utilization rate: Lowered enrollment rates in Medicaid and CHIP and hence lowered accessibility rate, lowered reimbursement rates, inadequate infrastructure and lack of outreach and education to providers and patients. The downward trend in adult utilization, specifically among the vulnerable population is troubling and poses a continued threat to deliver oral health care to this group.
